Oak Grove Plantation attracts a lot of international travelers, despite its distance from major cities. Visitors from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden are among recent guests at our bed & breakfast.
The Fritoff family from Sweden just completed a four-day visit with us on Saturday, between visits also to Washington, D.C., New Market, Va. and Virginia Beach. We asked them what they liked about Oak Grove and South Boston. “We really enjoyed taking our children to the Danville science museum,” said Tomas Fritioff, speaking for his children, Greger, 5, and Torum, 10. His wife, Karin Fritioff, said they also enjoyed the pool at Staunton River State Park and the games, toys and Legos on our sun porch.
Tomas said the family enjoyed the house itself, which still reflects much of the period when it was built in the early 1800s. The cool pine forest with its three miles of paths were also an attraction.
The family also got to speak English to various Virginians and get a taste of the local culture. When Tomas asked the waitress at a local restaurant if the food he wanted was fried, she responded cheerfully: “Sir, this is the South. In the South, EVERYTHING is fried!”
