Every year, Pickett hosts a “Granny Camp” at Oak Grove Plantation Bed & Breakfast for
her grandchildren from California. This year, Holden, age 7, and Rhys, 4, spent a week experiencing summers the way kids did over a half-century ago. They hiked in the woods, played on tire swings, ran with the dogs, played board games and swam in the lake. There was no TV and there were no videogames.
For dinner each night, Pickett had them cook homemade pizza and other dishes. They churned homemade ice cream with Grandpa Mike. They heard stories read by Grandma Joan.
We asked our young visitors what they liked best. “I liked going to the swimming pool and walking the dogs,” said Rhys “I liked going to the minipark in the woods (with swings and a slide) and playing with the dogs,” said Holden.
Your children may not be
our grandchildren, but we would treat them the same way. Bring them with you for a dose of 20th century farm life and a genuine good time.
